TOMMY'S DOUBLE-DECK PATIENCE (C) COPYRIGHT 1993 BY TOMMY'S TOYS
P. O. BOX 11261, DENVER, CO 80211 USA. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
CATALOG #TM-145-1A
INSTRUCTIONS:
THE GAMES KNOWN AS PATIENCE OR SOLITAIRE ARE AMONG THE OLDEST KNOWN PASTIMES
WITH CARDS. TOMMY'S TOYS IMPLEMENTS THE FORMS AS GIVEN IN "THE COMPLETE BOOK
OF SOLITAIRE AND PATIENCE GAMES", BY ALBERT MOREHEAD AND GEOFFREY MOTT-SMITH
(GROSSET & DUNLAP, 1949).
THIS PROGRAM IMPLEMENTS THE FOLLOWING PATIENCE GAMES, EACH PLAYED WITH A
DOUBLE DECK TO MAKE WINNING EASIER:
TITLE CHANCE OF WINNING A.K.A.
----- ----------------- ------
1. FROG 1 IN 5 GAMES TOAD
2. VIRGINIA REEL 1 IN 4 GAMES
3. SALIC LAW 1 IN 3 GAMES
4. FORTY THIEVES 1 IN 4 GAMES NAPOLEON AT ST. HELENA
NOTE: THESE ODDS ARE FOR REAL GOOD PLAYERS AND ARE AVERAGES FOR A WHOLE LOT OF
GAMES; YOU ALWAYS GET HOT AND COLD STREAKS.
THE COMPUTER CAN ALSO PLAY WHILE YOU WATCH FOR A DEMO.
THE DECK:
THE DECK CONSISTS OF 104 CARDS (TWO DECKS OF 52 MIXED). IT IS USUALLY
DISPLAYED IN THE LOWER RIGHT HAND CORNER OF THE SCREEN.
THE SHUFFLE:
TO MAKE IT EASIER TO WIN, WE ALWAYS START OUT WITH A NEW (ORDERED) DECK, THEN
SHUFFLE IT EXACTLY 7 TIMES AND CUT IT, WITH AT LEAST 5 CARDS IN EACH PACKET.
THIS INSURES THAT THERE ARE PLENTY OF SEQUENTIAL RUNS IN THE DECK.
FOR THE HIGH ROLLERS, WE PROVIDE THE OPTION TO START WITH A COMPLETELY RANDOM
ORDER INSTEAD (ANSWER NO TO THE 'NEW DECK EACH TIME' QUESTION).
RULES:
*****************************************************************************
1. FROG
FIRST, A RESERVE OF 13 CARDS IS CREATED BY THE COMPUTER AND PUT AT THE TOP
LEFT OF THE SCREEN. IN DEALING THE RESERVE, ANY ACES THAT TURN UP ARE PLACED
IN A ROW AT THE RIGHT OF THE RESERVE. IF NO ACE TURNED UP IN DEALING THE
RESERVE, ONE ACE IS REMOVED FROM THE DECK AND USED.
TO PLAY: TURN UP CARDS FROM THE DECK ONE AT A TIME, AND TRY TO BUILD THE
ACE OR ACES UP TO THE KINGS, REGARDLESS OF SUITS. ANYTIME AN ACE COMES
UP, IT IS USED TO START A NEW FOUNDATION AUTOMATICALLY. ULTIMATELY THERE
WILL BE 8 FOUNDATION PILES.
IF A CARD DEALT FROM THE DECK IS UNPLAYABLE, IT HAS TO BE LAID ON ONE OF UP
TO 5 WASTEPILES, YOUR CHOICE. THEN THE TOP CARD OF EACH WASTEPILE, AS
WELL AS THE TOP CARD OF THE RESERVE, ARE ALWAYS AVAILABLE FOR PLAY ON THE
FOUNDATIONS.
HINTS. RESERVE ONE WASTEPILE FOR KINGS AND QUEENS. ON OTHER PILES BUILD
DOWNWARD IF YOU CAN, IN SEQUENCE. DON'T PUT CARDS OF SAME RANK ON THE
SAME WASTEPILE OR IT MIGHT BLOCK A WIN. TRY TO BUILD 2 OR MORE WASTEPILES
DOWN IN COMPLEMENTARY SEGMENTS SO THAT AS SOON AS A FOUNDATION IS BUILT
UP TO THE TRIGGER POINT THESE WASTEPILES CAN BE EMPTIED OUT.
KEYBOARD COMMANDS:
WN, WHERE N=1..5 MOVE CARD FROM DECK TO WASTEPILE #N AND DRAW
ANOTHER CARD.
N<ENTER> OR N<SPACEBAR> SAME AS WN
DN, WHERE N=1..8 MOVE CARD FROM DECK TO FOUNDATION #N AND DRAW
ANOTHER CARD.
RN, WHERE N=1..8 MOVE CARD FROM RESERVE TO FOUNDATION #N
NM, WHERE N=1..5,M=1..8 MOVE CARD FROM WASTEPILE #N TO FOUNDATION #M
X GIVE UP

2. VIRGINIA REEL
HERE IS A NEAT SOLITAIRE GAME REMINISCENT OF A SQUARE DANCE! BE SURE AND
PLAY COUNTRY MUSIC IN THE BACKGROUND (HA HA)!
INITIAL DEAL. ONE 2, 3, AND 4, OF DIFFERENT SUITS, ARE REMOVED FROM THE DECK
BY THE COMPUTER AND PLACED IN A COLUMN AT THE LEFT OF THE SCREEN, FORMING THE
LEFT EDGE OF THE FIRST 3 ROWS OF THE TABLEAU.
THE COMPUTER THEN FILLS OUT THE INITIAL TABLEAU OF 3 ROWS OF 8 CARDS BY DRAWING
FROM THE DECK. T THEN DEALS A ROW OF 8 CARDS AT THE BOTTOM TO FORM THE
RESERVE. THE INITIAL SCREEN THUS HAS 4 ROWS OF 8 CARDS ON DISPLAY.
THE GOAL OF THE GAME IS TO FILL THE FIRST ROW WITH 2'S, THE SECOND ROW WITH
3'S, AND THE 3RD ROW WITH 4'S, THEN BUILD UP THESE FOUNDATIONS IN SUIT BY
THREES:
2, 5, 8, J
3, 6, 9, Q
4, 7, 10 K
THAT WILL USE UP 3 X 4 X 8 = 96 CARDS, SO 96 IS THE MAXIMUM SCORE. WHAT
HAPPENED TO THE 8 ACES? THEY ARE DISCARDED DURING PLAY AND DON'T COUNT FOR
ANYTHING!
PLAY. A CARD FROM THE TABLEAU MAY BE PLAYED ON A FOUNDATION PILE, BUT ONLY IF
THE SPACE IT CREATES IN THE TABLEAU CAN IMMEDIATELY BE FILLED BY A TWO,
THREE, OR FOUR (FOUNDATION CARD), WHICHEVER CORRESPONDS TO THE ROW IN QUESTION.
THE CARD TO FILL THE SPACE MUST COME FROM THE RESERVE, OR FROM ANOTHER
ROW IN THE TABLEAU IF A RESERVE CARD IS IMMEDIATELY USED TO FILL THAT SPACE
IN THE OTHER ROW. A RESERVE CARD CAN BE PLAYED DIRECTLY ON A FOUNDATION PILE.
EXCHANGE. A LONE FOUNDATION CARD IN ONE ROW MAY BE EXCHANGED FOR ANOTHER
IN ANOTHER ROW, BUT ONLY IF THE EXCHANGE LEAVES EACH FOUNDATION CARD IN ITS
PROPER ROW.
CYCLICAL EXCHANGE. A 2, 3, AND 4 MAY BE CYCICALLY EXCHANGED AT THE SAME TIME
IF IT COMES OUT WITH EACH IN ITS PROPER ROW TOO.
REPLENISHING THE RESERVE. WHEN A CARD IS PLAYED FROM THE RESERVE, ITS
SPACE IS NOT REPLENISHED. WHEN THE PLAYER IS READY, HE MAY DEAL ANOTHER
ROW OF 8 CARDS ON THE RESERVE AT THE SAME TIME. IT IS TRADITIONAL TO
FINISH THE GAME WITHOUT A REDEAL.
ACES. ACES ARE DEAD CARDS, AND IF FOUND IN THE TABLEAU THEY MAY BE DISCARDED,
BUT ONLY IF THEIR SPACES ARE FILLED LIKE ANYTHING ELSE. IF AN ACE IS DEALT TO
THE RESERVE IT IS IMMEDIATELY DISCARDED BY THE COMPUTER AND THE SPACE LEFT IN
THE RESERVE UNFILLED.
HINTS. THE BIG NO-NO IS BURYING FOUNDATION CARDS IN THE RESERVE. TRY TO MAKE
SPACES IN THE TABLEAU AND GET THOSE FOUNDATION CARDS OFF OF THEIR TRAPPED
BROTHERS!
IT'S A BEGINNER'S MISTAKE TO EXCHANGE FOUNDATION CARDS IN THE TABLEAU FOR NO
REASON. YOU MIGHT WANT TO LEAVE A FOUNDATION CARD IN THE WRONG ROW OF THE
TABLEAU IF THAT ROW IS NOT RICH IN SPACE-MAKING POSSIBILITIES, TO AWAIT A
FOUNDATION CARD IN THE RESERVE TO TAKE ITS PLACE. BUT A CYCLICAL EXCHANGE MAY
BE WARRANTED TO AVOID BURYING A LOW CARD SUCH AS A 5 THRU 7.
A REVERSE BLOCK, THAT IS, A HIGHER CARD OVER A LOWER CARD OF THE SAME SUIT,
NEEDED FOR THE SAME FOUNDATION (A MULTIPLE OF 3 APART IN RANK), IS FATAL
UNLESS THE UPPER CARD CAN BE PLAYED ON A FOUNDATION TO FREE THE LOWER CARD.
BUT REMEMBER THE DOUBLE DECK! EACH CARD HAS A DUPLICATE, SO YOU MUST MENTALLY
TAG ALL "FIRST-PLAY" CARDS AMONG THE DUPLICATES OR BLOCK A WIN INADVERTENTLY.
A DOUBLE REVERSE BLOCK IS ALWAYS FATAL.
END (FACE) CARDS SHOULD NOT BE BUILT ON FOUNDATIONS UNTIL THE LAST CARD IS
DEALT, EXCEPT TO UNTANGLE A REVERSAL AS ABOVE. DITTO FOR PRE-END CARDS (8S,
9S, AND 10S) WHICH HAVE THE REQUIRED END CARD LYING IN THE RESERVE COVERING
NO NEEDED CARD. TAKE MENTAL NOTE OF RESERVE PILES THAT ARE "NON-DANGEROUS",
FOR EXAMPLE, ALL FACE CARDS OR ALL CARDS THAT CAN BE PLAYED ON THE SAME
FOUNDATION IN SEQUENCE. A PRE-END CARD IS HAZARDOUS TO BUILD IF ITS END CARD
IS STILL UNDEALT.
KEYBOARD COMMANDS:
N DEAL NEXT 8 CARDS ONTO RESERVE
B BUILD A CARD ONTO THE FOUNDATIONS. A CURSOR WILL APPEAR AND EACH
TIME YOU HIT THE SPACE BAR IT WILL CYCLE TO THE NEXT CARD THAT CAN
BE PLAYED. WHEN YOU REACH THE CARD YOU WANT, HIT THE ENTER KEY.
IF THERE IS ONLY 1 POSSIBLE CARD THAT CAN BE BUILT, IT IS AUTOMATIC.
USE THIS ALSO IF YOU WANT TO GET RID OF AN ACE IN THE TABLEAU.
AFTER THE CARD IS BUILT ONTO THE FOUNDATION, THE CURSOR APPEARS AGAIN
TO SELECT THE CARD TO FILL THE SPACE WITH; HIT SPACE BAR TO SELECT,
THEN ENTER TO PLAY.
E EXCHANGE LONE FOUNDATION CARDS IN THE TABLEAU. IF THERE IS ONLY ONE
POSSIBILITY THE COMPUTER WILL DO IT AUTOMATICALLY ELSE A CURSOR
WILL APPEAR FOR SELECTION.
X GIVE UP
*****************************************************************************
3. SALIC LAW
INITIAL TABLEAU. THE COMPUTER DEALS AN INITIAL TABLEAU BY REMOVING ONE
KING FROM THE DECK AND USING IT TO FOUND PILE #1 AT THE LEFT. DURING PLAY THE
CARDS ARE DEALT ON THAT PILE, OVERLAPPING DOWN FACE UP, UNTIL THE NEXT
KING IS REACHED. IT IS USED TO FOUND PILE #2, AND SO ON, UNTIL THE WHOLE
DECK HAS BEEN DEALT AND 8 PILES CREATED, EACH OF PROBABLY DIFFERENT SIZES.
DURING THE DEAL ALL ACES AND QUEENS ARE AUTOMATICALLY HELD OUT, THE ACES BEING
USED TO FOUND THE 8 FOUNDATION PILES. THE QUEENS HAVE NO USE AND ARE DISCARDED
(SOMETIMES DISPLAYED FOR EFFECT). FOUNDATIONS ARE BUILT UP FROM ACES TO
JACKS REGARDLESS OF SUITS.
PLAY. THE TOP CARD OF EACH TABLEAU PILE IS AVAILABLE FOR BUILDING TO A
FOUNDATION, DURING THE DEAL AS WELL AS AFTER. A BARE KING IS THE SAME AS A
SPACE AND ANY AVAILABLE CARD MAY BE MOVED TO IT, BUT ONLY AFTER THE DEAL IS
COMPLETE.
KEYBOARD COMMANDS:
N OR D OR SPACE BAR DEAL NEXT CARD TO TABLEAU
IF, WHERE I=1..8 BUILD TOP CARD OF PILE #I TO FOUNDATION
FF BUILD TOP CARD OF RIGHTMOST PILE TO FOUNDATION
IJ, WHERE I,J=1..8 MOVE TOP CARD OF PILE #I TO SPACE ON PILE #J
X GIVE UP
0 OR . START COMMAND OVER
TAB KEY:
SINCE SOMETIMES A TABLEAU PILE GOES OFF THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN, THE CARDS
GET STACKED UP AT THE BOTTOM. YOU CAN USE THE TAB KEY AND THE ENTER KEY TO
EXAMINE THE INVISIBLE CARDS.
*****************************************************************************
4. FORTY THIEVES (NAPOLEON AT ST. HELENA)
THE INITIAL TABLEAU IS 10 COLUMNS OF 4 CARDS EACH, OVERLAPPING EACH ROW
DOWNWARD.
THE 8 ACES ARE MOVED, AS THEY BECOME AVAILABLE, TO A ROW ABOVE THE TABLEAU.
THEY ARE THEN BUILT UP IN SUIT TO KINGS.
PLAY. ONLY ONE CARD AT A TIME MAY BE MOVED, FROM THE TOP OF A TABLEAU PILE
TO ANOTHER PILE, OR TO A FOUNDATION. TABLEAU PILES ARE BUILT DOWN IN SUIT,
FOUNDATIONS UP IN SUIT TO THE KINGS. A SPACE (EMPTY COLUMN) MAY BE FILLED
WITH ANY AVAILABLE CARD FROM TABLEAU OR WASTEPILE.
WASTEPILE. AS PLAY PROGRESSES, CARDS ARE TURNED UP FROM THE DECK ONE AT A
TIME AND DISCARDED TO A SINGLE WASTEPILE IF UNPLAYABLE. THE TOP CARD IS
ALWAYS AVAILABLE TO PLAY ON THE FOUNDATION OR TABLEAU.
PRIVILEGE. YOU MAY PEEK AT THE NEXT CARD FROM THE DECK BEFORE PLAYING.
SO YOU CAN ENJOY A KILLER PATIENCE PARTY, THE CARD IS SHOWN CONTINUOUSLY
LEFT OF THE WASTEPILE.
HINTS. TRY FOR A SPACE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE BY CONCENTRATING ON A COLUMN TO
BE CLEANED OUT, EVEN IF IT MEANS REFRAINING FROM SOME AVAILABLE BUILDS.
KEYBOARD COMMANDS:
NF, WHERE N=1..9,10 BUILD TOP CARD FROM COLUMN N TO THE FOUNDATIONS
(NOTE: USE 0 FOR 10 IN THIS & FOLLOWING COMMANDS: E.G., 0F NOT 10F)
NM, WHERE N,M=1..9,10 MOVE TOP CARD FROM COLUMN N TO COLUMN M
DF BUILD TOP CARD OF DECK TO FOUNDATIONS
SPACE BAR MOVE TOP CARD OF DECK TO WASTEPILE
WN MOVE TOP CARD OF WASTEPILE TO COLUMN N
WF BUILD TOP CARD OF WASTEPILE TO THE FOUNDATIONS
X GIVE UP

LUCAS VARIATION: THIS MAKES THE GAME MUCH EASIER! THE 8 ACES WILL BE REMOVED
FROM THE DECK FOR YOU AND USED TO START THE FOUNDATIONS BEFORE PLAY.
